The Dachshund was bred in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers (dachs, badgers; hund, dog) and dig them out of their holes. Their short legs allowed them to traverse narrow passages without sacrificing body strength. Their short legs also allowed them to penetrate dense thickets. Today's Dachshund more typically hunts for morsels under the table than for animals underground, but he retains the conformation and temperment of a hunter. Dachshunds are accomplished hunting dogs despite their lapdog reputations. |

Dachshunds come in a variety of coats and colors. There are Smooth, Long, or Wire Hair Dachshunds. The three coat types tend to have slightly different personalities. The smooth tends to be more one person or one-family dog, remaining fairly aloof with strangers. The Longhaired dachshund is described as the sweetest members of the breed. Wirehairs are the clowns of the breed having a tendancy to play more than the other two coat types. The dachshund is one of the most colorful of all breeds. Dachshund colors are Red, Black and tan, Cream (American or English cream), Wheaten, Wild boar, Red boar, Sable, Chocolate and tan, Blue and tan, and Isabella and tan. Patterns in all of these colors are Brindle, Piebald and Dapple. |
The Dachshund is brave, intelligent and independent. This breed forms a strong bond with its family. The Dachshund believes he is bigger than he is and can be very courageous around other dogs. The Smooth and Long-haired Dachshund should be brushed occasionally to remove dead hairs. Wire-haired Dachshund need to be plucked yearly. Dachshunds have a mind of their own, so you as the owner need to be trained first if you want a well trained dog. Dachshunds are active and full of mischief. Make sure you have secure areas for them to run and play. |
